For the March meeting of the Chelsea Amateur Radio Club (March 14th, 2023), Wesley Cardone will be giving a presentation on paralleling of portable generators. The presentation will examine the electrical theory enabling attendees to understand many other aspects of what happens when you hook to of these things together. Wes will also look at the practical end of the practice looking at:

  • Comparing generators manufactured explicitly for paralleling against these home-brews for
    • Advantages
    • Limitations
  • Synchronization of the two phases
    • What is synchronization in the first place?
      • Amplitude
      • Frequency
      • Capacity
      • Fine-tuning under no-load conditions
      • Circulating currents

In Michigan this last week (late February of 2023) we had a major ice storm where very large numbers of residential and commercial power losses were experienced. There were a lot of portable generators running and, no doubt, many residents began to think more seriously about how the deployment of portable generators should be handled.

One consideration in portable power generation is paralleling two generators to double the available wattage to the load. This whole concept is likely a mystery to many so we at the Chelsea Amateur Radio Club have assembled a web page that discusses much of the theory as well as many practical aspects of this practice. Please click here or on the image above to be taken to that page.
